Each rock goes through a meticulous process of cutting, shaping and engraving before it sets out on the journey to its new home.
First, the rock is cut and shaped into a rough cylindrical form.
Next, is the process of hollowing which determines the thickness of the walls and the amount of translucency that the finished piece will have.
The last stage of executing an alabaster piece is to finish the surface.
The piece is sanded extensively which results in a highly polished surface that is then cleaned with mineral spirits and an oil or varnish finish is applied, followed by a buffed wax finish.
Every piece of alabaster will differ in colour, opacity and veining.
Therefore, no two alabaster pieces are identical, meaning each alabaster fixture is a unique, exclusive piece of art.
